Carving Jack-O-Lanterns out of pumpkins has a long history with Halloween festivities, but our favorite demonic faces were not always been carved out of pumpkins. The origin of carving those Halloween faces comes from the Irish myth about Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil for money. But when Jack died, he was not allowed to enter either heaven nor hell and was sentenced to wander the earth pointlessly for eternity. So in Ireland people have started to carve demonic faces out of turnips to frighten away the wandering soul of Stingy Jack. And when the Irish moved to the US the tradition moved with them and more people have begun to carve Jack-o'-lanterns from pumpkins.
