Wario is often depicted as a rival to Mario, and he has starred in his own video game series, as well as appearing in several Mario games. Wario was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. He first appeared in the game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, released in 1992. Wario was originally conceived as a villain for the game, but he was later redesigned as an anti-hero.
