Dobby was a male house-elf who served the Malfoy family, the family of dark wizards who treated him cruelly, but he disobeyed his masters and tried to warn Harry Potter of the reopening of the Chamber of Secrets. Harry Potter tricked Lucius Malfoy into freeing Dobby. After being freed Dobby was happy and enjoyed working as a hobby and was pleased to join the Hogwarts staff. At Hogwarts, he could go as he liked and was not overburdened by many tasks. Dobby even tried to save the lives of Harry Potter and his companions but he got fatally wounded by Bellatrix Lestrange's knife. Dobby saved his friends departing them to safety at Shell Cottage.
