The first Thanksgiving is often portrayed as a friendly harvest festival where Pilgrims and Indians come together to eat and give thanks. Similarly, as we do, using this time to express gratitude and to be with our families. But in reality, that assembly of the Wampanoag Peoples and the settlers in 1621 had much more to do with political alliances, diplomacy, and the pursuit of peace. And typically, when these settlers had what they referred to as thanksgiving observances, they actually fasted. But we celebrate Thanksgiving as a national holiday that helps our family and friends gather for a meal and many other celebrations like football games and parades.
